Linux Version

There have been some changes in the Armagetron project structure. The original author, Z-Man, took a very long break from development. Long enough, in fact, for another team of gifted and motivated developers to produce a fork called Armagetron Advanced. They managed to actually understand some of Z-Man's convoluted code and made meaningful additions in the form of their release 0.2.7.0.
Z-Man has reappeared in the meantime, and joined the Armagetron Advanced development team. So, now Armagetron Advanced is no longer a fork, it is the official real thing. Armagetron has been obsoleted by Armagetron advanced. At the time of this writing, a new release 0.2.7.1 has just been made public that fixes, among others, some security issues of interest for people running a server.
Z-Man wishes to apologize to everyone who had to wait far too long for news or new developments, and for those who might have been affected by the security issues. For those who cannot part with the original Armagetron, version 0.2.6.1 has been released which fixes the most critical security issues, but no other bugs.

ORIGINAL CONTENT, BEWARE, IT IS OUTDATED:

Armagetron is built on SuSE Linux 8.0; the binary packages will work best with this version. Check out the unix compatibility table to find out what package you should get; if in doubt, choose the source archive.

Please have a look at the documentation for installation instructions; open the Changelog to see what has been added or fixed recently.

Dedicated Server

The dedicated server is a special program that allows setting up a game server without playing on it. Since no input/output is needed, the dedicated server runs without the model and texture files and without the libraries. Configuring it is a mess, I must admit...

Stable Version 0.2.5.2 for Linux:

Sourceget rpmget tar.gzget tar.bz2
Client Binariesget rpmget tar.gzget tar.bz2
Server Binariesget rpmget tar.gzget tar.bz2
Client Binaries, executable and documentation onlyget rpm
Client Binaries, data onlyget rpm
This version is vulnerable to certain easy to fabricate DOS attacks. If you plan to run a server on the internet, you should use 0.2.6.1 instead.

Downloads are managed by several mirror servers. Sometimes, one of them has problems; simply select another one then.

You may get higher transfer rates on PlanetMirror.

Development Version 0.2.6.1 for Linux:

Sourceget rpmget tar.gzget tar.bz2
Client Binariesget rpmget tar.gzget tar.bz2
Server Binariesget rpmget tar.gzget tar.bz2
Client Binaries, executable and documentation onlyget rpm
Client Binaries, data onlyget rpm
Version 0.2.6.1 is mainly a security fix release. Several DOS attack possibilities have been found, this release fixes the most important ones. Nothing can be done against the fake player server flood attack currently. If you want new features, you should upgrade to Armagetron Advanced, there has been the release 0.2.7.1 superior to 0.2.6.1 in every aspect.

Older versions can be grabbed directly form the download directory, even older ones from the old web page.

CVS

To get a really up-to-date-version with all the latest bugs, you can use CVS with the two commands

cvs -d:pserver:anonymous@cvs.armagetron.sourceforge.net:/cvsroot/armagetron login
cvs -d:pserver:anonymous@cvs.armagetron.sourceforge.net:/cvsroot/armagetron co armagetron
Just hit ENTER at the password prompt.
Alternative: Execute the shell script update_cvs if you already have a version of the source code. Note that the CVS version does not contain the configure script; you need to generate it yourself by calling autoconf.
